W regionalizacji fizyczno-geograficznej Polski obszar Garbu Opolskiego zaliczony został do makrore-gionu Nizina Śląska i mezoregionu Pradolina Wrocławska. Kwalifikacja ta nie jest zgodna z kryteria-mi wyróżniania mezoregionów i makroregionów. Garb Opolski pod względem budowy geologicznej może być identyfikowany jako część nieodległej Wyżyny Śląskiej, choć położony jest na znacząco mniejszej wysokości niż granica hipsometryczna między nizinami a wyżynami. Przykład Garbu Opolskiego pokazuje problem określenia przynależności wyspowych jednostek fizyczno-geograficznych na pograniczu wyżyn i nizin Polski. Vengono presentati i metodi aggiornati per la stima delle precipitazioni intense massime annue di fissato tempo di ritorno in Sicilia. AbstractSubdivision of the neuroectoderm into discrete gene expression domains is essential for the correct specification of neural stem cells (neuroblasts) during central nervous system development. Here, we extend our knowledge on dorsoventral (DV) patterning of the Drosophila brain and uncover novel genetic interactions that control expression of the evolutionary conserved homeobox genes ventral nervous system defective (vnd), intermediate neuroblasts defective (ind), and muscle segment homeobox (msh). Generation of Natural Runoff Monthly Series at Ungauged Sites Using a Regional Regressive Model

Many hydrologic applications require reliable estimates of runoff in river basins to face the widespread lack of data, both in time and in space. A regional method for the reconstruction of monthly runoff series is here developed and applied to Sicily (Italy). A simple modeling structure is adopted, consisting of a regression-based rainfall–runoff model with four model parameters, calibrated through a two-step procedure. Monthly runoff estimates are based on precipitation, temperature, and exploiting the autocorrelation with runoff at the previous month. Annual runoff regional frequency analysis in Sicily

Abstract This paper performs annual runoff frequency analysis in Sicily, Italy using the index runoff method. Homogeneous regions, not necessarily defined by geographical boundaries but sharing common features from a morphologic and climatic standpoint, have been identified. For each region a single probability distribution function can be fitted to the available annual runoff data scaled by the index runoff. Starting from an initial dataset of 105 hydrometric stations, 57 stations have been selected using heuristic criteria associated with the Hosking and Wallis’s discordancy measure. Artykuł przedstawia propozycję wyznaczenia granic Sudetów Wschodnich oraz podziału fizycznogeograficznego makroregionu na mezoregiony. Przy wyznaczaniu granic uwzględniono w większym stopniu genetyczno-geologiczny podział Sudetów związany z orogenezą waryscyjską. W podziale na mezoregiony w większym stopniu uwzględniono kryteria litostratygraficzne.

Key-indicators for maternity hospitals and newborn readmission in Sicily

This paper proposes a composite indicator for the classification of maternity units, which takes into account for the different dimensions of service delivery, as potential predictors of health outcomes. As a measure of outcome, infant readmissions is considered, being a proxy of morbidity. The results highlight that after controlling for risk factors of the newborn, and for the presence of neonatal intensive unit, infants born in lower level hospitals show readmission rates higher than infants born in higher level hospitals.

Regional-scale modeling of reference evapotranspiration: Intercomparison of two simplified temperature- and radiation-based approaches

Two regionalized models for the distributed estimation of daily reference evapotranspiration, the temperature-based Hargreaves (HE) and the radiation-based Makkink (MK) equations, are applied in Southern Italy during the years 2007 and 2008. Spatially distributed meteorological inputs, such as air temperature and incoming solar radiation, were derived from geostatistical interpolation of ground data and from the Land Surface Analysis Satellite Application Facility (LSA-SAF) surface radiation product, respectively.
